Identify, explore and observe the plants, in our neighborhood

For a better awareness of the preservation of biodiversity, ecology and the impact of climate change, students of the "Ovidius" high school will be involved during the "Erasmus Days" program, in the activity "Identify, explore and observe the plants in your neighborhood".

For the successful accomplishment of this project, the students will use the "Pl@ntNet" application. This is a platform that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to facilitate the identification and inventory of plant species. This application allows the identification of plants with the help of a simple photo taken with the mobile phone. The students will be divided into groups of 5. They will have two days to photograph and identify as many plants as possible from different areas of the city. On the day of the project presentation, each group will show the plants found to the others. Thus, they will identify the most or rarely encountered plants, trying to identify which plants have better conditions for development in their city. Equally, the students will have discussions about how they can get involved for a greater diversity of plants in their city.

Seawater quality in the Constanta coastal area

Water, the vital resource of life support, represents the main environmental factor, an important vector for the spread of pollution both locally and across borders.

The protection of water quality is a permanent action, to which every member of society must make a conscious and responsible contribution. For this purpose, it is necessary to raise awareness, through all means of information or education, of the social, economic and ecological importance of the problems and actions to prevent and combat the pollution of water resources.

Students of the Ovidius Theoretical High School will take water samples from the accessible areas between Modern Beach and Pescărie. They will analyze the following water quality indicators:

  • general physico-chemical indicators: temperature, pH
  • mineralization degree indicators: fixed residue, chlorides, sulfates, calcium, magnesium, sodium, etc.;
  • selective physical-chemical indicators: phosphates, hardness, alkalinity.
  • specific physical-chemical indicators (toxic): cyanides, phenols, detergents, pesticides.
  • biological indicators that, by analyzing the species of organisms that populate the aquatic environment, indicate the level of saprobity of the water.
  • bacteriological indicators that, by determining the number of total and feces coliform bacteria, measure the degree of bacterial pollution.

Cultural trails

On the 15th October takes place the presentation of the Erasmus Program in Germany, Hamburg. Its aim is to apply the concepts and the information assimilated during the exchange, to encourage students to take part in this kind of intercultural activities, to promote the learning of foreign languages, to get into contact with other teenagers and to accept other nationalities.

The activity will start with the presentation of the program and the activities that the students have made, such as the importance of healthy food, of sports for body and mind, traditional customs, minorities in Dobrudja etc.

In groups of 4 or 5, the students will create their own posters, on different themes, such as food, sports etc. They will cooperate and brainstorm ideas related to the culture of the two countries and they will get accustomed to comparing the two nationalities and identifying their similarities and differences.

Ocean literacy

Ocean literacy is essential for understanding the critical role oceans play in our daily lives. They regulate the climate, support biodiversity, and provide vital resources such as food and oxygen. Without adequate knowledge, people may underestimate the impact of their actions on marine ecosystems. Through education, individuals can become more aware of environmental issues, such as pollution and climate change, and make informed decisions to protect the oceans. Furthermore, understanding ocean sciences can spark technological innovations and sustainable solutions to preserve this vital resource. Ocean literacy is not only important for scientists but for society as a whole, as oceans play a fundamental role in maintaining the planet’s balance. The students attending the Erasmus mobilities under Erasmus + project with Piri Reis Highschool Istanbul, Turkey will share their experience for the new comers in the project.
